In what was surely one of the most auspicious debuts in screen history, Julie not only won the Best Actress Academy Award for her breakout performance in the film but was catapulted, almost overnight, into international superstardom as the world’s favourite singing nanny. Walt Disney was of course the one who introduced Julie to the wider movie-going public when he cast her in her first film role as the eponymous lead of his hit 1964 motion picture, Mary Poppins. That Julie was one of the earliest recipients of the award, and only the second front-of-camera talent after Fred MacMurray to be thus honoured (fellow Disney actor, Fess Parker was also inducted the same year as Julie), is a sure sign of just how strong and significant professional relations between Julie and Disney have been over the years. ![]() Initiated just four years earlier, the Disney Legends Program was created to honour select individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the global success of the Disney media juggernaut. In 1991, in a special ceremony at the Walt Disney Company’s Burbank headquarters, Julie Andrews was formally inducted into the Disney Legend Hall of Fame. Or, perhaps, Julie had some left-over fabric and had a second dress made later? Or, perhaps, we should be worried that we even notice such things let alone ponder them online? Either way, what is known beyond the shadow of a doubt is that only Julie Andrews could pair a sleeveless Californian sundress with ‘proper’ white gloves and make it seem the quintessence of sixties cool! At first, we thought it was the same dress modified into a sleeveless number but closer inspection reveals the positioning of the floral motifs is slightly different. ![]() Hawk-eyed purveyors of extreme Julie-trivia might note that Julie is wearing a dress remarkably similar to the one she wore to the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Place in July 1958.
